Earth Day 2026: Our Power | Our Planet

Susie Claxton
Good morning. Good to see you. I'm here to remind you about, Earth Day celebrations that are in April. The first day or the first Earth Day was founded 56 years ago now on April 22nd, 1970, by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson and organized by activist Dennis Hayes to protest environmental degradation. A national teach in was focusing on air and water pollution. And it was inspired by student anti-war movements and massive the massive 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara. It mobilized 20 million people, 20 million Americans, to demand action against pollution. The event led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. At the time, they weren't concentrating on climate change or the horrors of plastic pollution, but. The theme of this Earth Day, as Jeff said, is our power, our planet. And to honor and celebrate Earth Day. Consider your impact on the Earth at home through your use of energy. Heating and cooling use the most energy of all buildings. Turn down your thermostat in the winter and up in the summer. Lighting. Turn off lights when you're not using them. This is something I often forget. Gasoline. Combine your car trips. Take public transit, walk or go electric appliances, full loads of laundry and dishes during non-peak times of the day. Eating. Eat lower on the food chain. Reduce animal products and at most meals. This is healthier for your heart as well. Celebrate in your community at the City of Fremont's, Earth Day Fair. It's Saturday, April 18th at the Downtown Event Center from 10 to 2. There are lots of activities. Let's go back and look at some of those. A lot of family fun activities. There's entertainment, there's live music. They have games and art activities. Our local ecology and agricultural agriculture, Fremont Leaf will be there, and they, often give away, fruits and vegetables. Starts. Sometimes Ace Hardware does too. Urban forest friends visit our friend bee and others from the church and, the community and, Tri-City Ecology Center is one of our partners. And they partner with Urban Forest Friends as well. Washington Hospital has a lot of good health information and giveaways and the Fremont residential services. Lots of good, helpful resources. You can drop off expired unused medication, prescription glasses. If this is just okay. Yeah. It is. There you go. Prescription eyeglasses. Syringes. Needles in approved containers and mercury thermometers. Anybody have a mercury thermometer? I still do. I really like it, but I think I'm going to get rid of it this year. The digital ones are really good. My favorite is secure document shredding drop off. Anybody have a bunch of stuff at home that you're afraid has personal information? You want it shredded? Okay, put it in a box. Now put it. Put it there where you'll remember it. And come on down and, drop it off and have it shredded. Talk with Republic Services about recycling. They, I have all kinds of things for a healthier environment. Every time I'm there, I go visit them. And, all of us need to learn how to sort our waste. Better. You often see me. See me at the trash cans, dumpster diving, going through them and saying, no, that goes in the trash. You know, that goes in the compost so you can learn how to do it too. Then let's celebrate it. Oh, and I should add, I forgot to write this down. We will have a table. The green team will have a table, and we'll be having a fun, giveaway. Regarding wind energy. Then let's celebrate a church on April 19th. We're going to have an Earth Day dirt and worms. That's chocolate cake. After service at fellowship. And, future activities. The green team's working on getting more information about wind energy. We've learned a lot about solar energy in the past. Number of years, but we're going to try to learn a little about winning wind energy in California as an alternative to fossil fuels. You may want to check out the California Wind Energy Association. Sorry, Jeff. Oh. Oh, I thank you. And as a reminder, we're still arranging a speaker and trying to arrange a speaker to help us with Fremont's new home web based assessment tool. My climate ready Fremont. And we have a Niles Discovery Church group. So let's make Earth Day every day and stay green by going green. And after Saint Patrick's Day, we'll continue green. Okay. Thank you.
