Importance of Urban Tree Canopies and Preserving Forests

You need to think this is special. At a recent green team meeting, a new member noted that our kairos moments are like preaching to the choir, and I have been thinking that over. Then, about two weeks ago, the mayor and the city manager of Union City made a presentation at Acacia Creek Way. No live. During the Q&A, I noted that the older areas of the city had very few trees, and I asked for her to comment.

The manager's explanation was that through the years, the residents had cut down most of the street trees and they had not been replaced. Thinking this over, I wondered if people living in these older, stable neighborhoods had information about the importance of trees. And I thought about how we could share this vital information. We are the well informed choir, and if we are willing to follow the direction given to us, given to us by Michelle Obama to do something, this might be our opportunity.

We can educate those who haven't had the opportunity to learn about the importance of having a tree canopy in urban areas and preserving the vast forests of the planet. So let's put out the message to those who need to know. You should all have a half sheet that was given out to you and I. There will be some more coffee, or if you didn't get one, to get started on our mission.

For those of you on zoom, the instructions will be in the window in the Thursday message and it's going to be on the blog. First, there's a, a short video listed there and please watch it again. We watched it together, and it was so wonderful that everybody clapped that Sunday. So it's pretty good. So what did it get?

Watch it again and then give it legs along with your personal message. I plan to begin with my city officials, especially the city manager, who seems to know all about the situation in Union City. So maybe that's a fertile place for me to start. The plan to talk to the League of Women Voters and friends who attend other churches, and if people in important places get lots of messages from us.

That's good, because, you know, repeating something doesn't hurt. So let's do something very important. Let's sing out some facts to people who might listen, and then be grateful to all the beautiful, hard working trees that surround it. It's a good day to thank a tree, and I have noticed that trees have started growing on the banners. Have you noticed them?

Look around. Those banners used to be plain, and all of a sudden trees are growing. I don't know who did it, but I have a good idea. So you can think of. Thanks. Someone up there created these trees out of strange materials to grace our our beautiful building here. And then you can also thank a tree. But this is our opportunity to be the choir that sings and educate other people.

So if you didn't get a half sheet, see me at coffee hour and I'll make sure that you get one. Thank you. Was that special?
