CleanStart Mobile Hygiene Unit

For someone experiencing homelessness, keeping yourself and your clothes clean can be incredibly challenging, and can greatly impact your ability to get and keep a job, or simply participate in society. To meet this need, the City of Fremont, City of Newark, and several community partners developed the Clean Start Mobile Hygiene Program to provide much-needed shower and laundry services to our homeless neighbors.

This program is self contained and needs volunteers to help check in the people who come to use the services. To volunteer to assist the Mobile Hygiene Unit, please send an email to SpecialProjects@cityserve.org to be added to their volunteer list. The City Serve coordinator will respond with instructions on how to schedule time to help with this program. The Mobile Hygiene Unit is scheduled to be at Niles Discovery Church on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Volunteers are needed to greet the homeless and check them in. Some help with the driver/operator may be needed when it gets busy. To volunteer, you will need to complete a volunteer survey and register with City Serve. Start by sending and email to SpecialProjects@CityServe.org.

Auxiliary Services

The Homelessness Study Group at Niles Discovery Church is coordinating auxiliary services in conjunction with the Mobile Hygiene Unit. We need donations in the form of healthy snacks, blankets, jackets, caps, t-shirts, underwear, nail clippers, tooth and hair brushes, bandaids, etc. A comprehensive list of items will be published soon.

The services that we are coordinating are:

People who cut hair Coordinated by Mari-Lyn
Clothes Menders Coordinated by Lisa from The Mend Zone
Food We are working with Tri-City Volunteers and Renegade Feeding to schedule deliveries. In the mean time, fresh fruits and healthy snacks are needed.
Health and Welfare We are woring with the Hope Van and Washington on Wheels to see if we can have them come out.
Counselors/Listeners Sidewalk Talk is being organized by Joy.

Other things are in the works. If you have an idea or would like to provide a service, please send an email to homelesshelp@nilesdiscoverychurch.org.
