The First Disciples of Jesus

³⁵ The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples,³⁶and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, ‘Look, here is the Lamb of God!’³⁷The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.³⁸When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’ They said to him, ‘Rabbi’ (which translated means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’³⁹He said to them, ‘Come and see.’ They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon.⁴⁰One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.⁴¹He first found his brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which is translated Anointed ).⁴²He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas’ (which is translated Peter ).

Psalm 42

Longing for God and His Help in Distress

To the leader. A Maskil of the Korahites.¹ As a deer longs for flowing streams,   so my soul longs for you, O God.² My soul thirsts for God,   for the living God.When shall I come and behold   the face of God?³ My tears have been my food   day and night,while people say to me continually,   ‘Where is your God?’ ⁴ These things I remember,   as I pour out my soul:how I went with the throng,    and led them in procession to the house of God,with glad shouts and songs of thanksgiving,   a multitude keeping festival.⁵ Why are you cast down, O my soul,   and why are you disquieted within me?Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,   my help⁶and my God. My soul is cast down within me;   therefore I remember youfrom the land of Jordan and of Hermon,   from Mount Mizar.
